"Go wild" serie, Recycled bra. 2012
Brassierettes (marionettes made of bra) stem from my interest in interactive sculpture, my intention of giving viewers objects they can manipulate and recreate the way an artist does. That is what started my interest in exploring the form and concept of puppets and marionettes. I made several marionettes with ostrich-like shapes. Soon it became a way of looking at objects around, in trash bins and thrift stores: how can this become one of my birds? The two pieces in the exhibit belong to a series of “brassierettes” for which I wanted to use objects that had once been purchased for their sex appeal and now were piling up in thrift store baskets or were trashed in landfills. (I swear I have never seen a bra in a recycle bin). My idea was to give these accessories a renewed appeal and at the same time liberate them from a body to dress, helping them become autonomous bodies themselves, able to seduce again. Brassierettes will hopefully be “upcycled” and “go wild” many a time before extinction.
